Hello!
I am so happy to have you here! I am Dr. Veena Angle, a qualified doctor and entrepreneur (I run a medical communications consultancy), mom to two picky eaters and wife to a foodie. So as you might guess, getting dinner on the table that’s fast to cook and is eaten without cribbing is a challenge. Thankfully, cooking has always been a passion. And more so, cooking from scratch, since I realised its importance in maintaining the gut health of my family.
What is gut health and Why is it important?
Gut health means having a healthy diversity of microbes in your intestines. Here are a few facts:
- We have almost as many microbes in our gut as the cells in our body.
- Collectively, these microbes have 100 times more genes than humans.
- There is increasing evidence that this collection of microbes, aka the gut microbiome, play an important role in immunity, mental health, and nutrition.
- There is also evidence that an imbalance in the type of microbes and their numbers can lead to development of many diseases including diabetes, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, cancers, autism, and depression to name a few.
- The secret to having a healthy gut lies in the food we eat.
The incidence of all these diseases is increasing at an alarming rate, contributed to by our failing gut health.
- What is causing this failure? It is an increased consumption of processed, preservative-loaded, sugar-rich foods, all of which are toxic to the gut microbiome.
- How do you reverse this trend? By removing these toxic foods from your pantry and going back to cooking fresh food from scratch.
- Is that possible on a daily basis for a family that needs to juggle careers, kids and recreation? Yes, it is!
Join me here as I share more knowledge on gut microbes, how they help us and how we can help them thrive. Along the way, I will also share my recipes for cooking from scratch, adapted to the modern family’s busy schedule.
Let’s get on the journey to better Gut Health From Scratch!
XOXO
